THE KIJIJI INITIATIVE

The Kijiji Initiative is a multi-faceted program designed to empower young women in Samburu County, Kenya. This annual initiative, held in conjunction with the Kijiji Cup. Kijiji CUP is an annual sports event that takes place in Maralal Town, Samburu County, from December 26th to December 31st. This year marks the 6th edition of the tournament, featuring 11 men’s soccer teams and 4 women’s soccer teams.

Additionally, we are introducing basketball for both men and women, with 4 volleyball teams for men and 2 for women also participating in this year’s tournament. The theme for Kijiji CUP 2024 is “Uniting villages, Nurturing futures.” This initiative aims to establish a profound sense of inclusiveness, support, and positivity within our community. By advocating for fairness, respect, and ethical conduct in both soccer and everyday life, we strive to cultivate a culture that embraces these core values.

The project will be implemented in Samburu Central, a region in Kenya characterized by significant challenges for women and girls. The area faces high rates of poverty, limited access to education and healthcare, and a deeply ingrained patriarchal social structure.

Key contextual factors influencing the project include:

  • Socio-cultural environment: Strong adherence to traditional gender roles and harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early marriage.
  • Economic challenges: High levels of poverty and limited economic opportunities, particularly for women.
  • Geographic isolation: Remote location and poor infrastructure hindering access to essential services.
  • Limited access to education: Low literacy rates and high dropout rates for girls, especially in secondary school.
  • Health disparities: High prevalence of HIV/AIDS and maternal mortality rates.

These factors contribute to the vulnerability of girls in Samburu Central and underscore the urgent need for interventions that address SRHR, GBV, and period poverty. By understanding this context, the project can be tailored to effectively meet the specific needs of the target population.

The Kijiji Initiative aims to address the pressing challenges faced by young women in Samburu County, including:

  • Harmful Traditional Practices: Harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) continue to persist, negatively impacting the health and well-being of young women.
  • Period Poverty: Many girls are unable to attend school or participate in daily activities due to lack of access to menstrual hygiene products.
  • Limited Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Information and Services: Many young women lack accurate information about their bodies, menstrual health, and sexual health.

High Rates of Gender-Based Violence: Young women in Samburu County are disproportionately affected by gender-based violence, including sexual assault, domestic violence, and early marriage

Target Participants:

We aim to reach over 1000 young women and girls aged 13-25 from the Samburu community. Additionally, we will engage with:

  • Community Leaders: Local leaders, elders, and parents to create awareness and support for the initiative.
  • Healthcare Providers: Healthcare workers to provide medical advice and support, especially regarding sexual and reproductive health.
  • Youth Organizations: Other youth organizations to collaborate on joint initiatives and share resources.
  • Indigenous People of Samburu
